It's the first Monday in August

This picture of geese crossing the road, in Reston, was taken over 10 years ago.

These two pictures were taken in Aldie, VA yesterday, August 3, 2025

Geese are so crazy!   But I am scared of them.   When we lived in Bangkok there was a large group of geese in the grounds of our apartment.  I decided to harass them by stomping my feet and walking toward them.   I learned that geese can be very aggressive!  They started to hiss and run toward me.  They were actually chasing me.  And, I was about 7 months pregnant.   I learned my lesson there!

But I do think they look cool when they cross the road in such an orderly manner.

The other day I posted pictures of the flags of the countries I have lived in.  I cannot say "we" because I have lived in these places under different circumstances.   The first few I live at as a child following my parents wherever they took me (us) .

Later I lived overseas and a spouse and a mother.  But not all of my kids have lived in all of the places I have lived.

Greece:   I was a baby when we went to Greece.   My brother and sister, Carol and Dale were older than me, so they remembered it.  They went to school there.

Family lore has it that I spoke Greek before I spoke English.  We had Greek maids who helped take care of me and they did not speak English.  My dad went away on a business trip and when he came back I was not able to speak in English!   I wish I could remember it

I have memories or at least images in my mind of Greece.  Mostly I suspect my memories are made up of movies and photos we have of our time in Greece.

At one point my sister and her husband were in Greece and while they were there, they tried to find our old house.   They didn't find it, so my sister called my dad back in the US and asked him for the address.  They had the address correct but the house was gone- replaced by something newer.

Okinawa:  I was three years old when we lived in Okinawa.  I remember riding some sort of military bus to get to my preschool.  I had very curly hair and my mom loved putting it into a pony tail on top of my head that looked like a fountain.   I must not have liked having my hair fiddled with because I locked myself in the bathroom and cut it all off.   I think my parents weren't home because they said that the maids were crying when my mom did come home.

Carol and I had a doll just like this when we lived in Okinawa

Afghanistan:   I was five when we moved there.  I remember there being huge mountains all around us.  In fact, when we returned to the States, most of my drawings had pictures of mountains in them.

Carol and Dale and I went to the International School in Kabul for the first year we were there.  The second year we went to a school called Ahlman Academy, a parochial school.  They school was actually in a house.  The attached website is from someone who went there after we were gone.

I have many memories of Afghanistan.   I always wanted to go back, but alas I have not.

In 1975, when Nick joined the US Foreign Service, there was an opening at the US Embassy in Kabul.  I really waned to go there but someone else was assigned there.   In 1979 Russia invaded Afghanistan and it was no longer an option to serve there.

This has been about the places I lived as a kid, with my parents and brother and sister.  The other flags and countries where I have lived are all of places where Nick and I lived and where three of our kids were born.
